Focus on your own learning/competence and be SMART. Not a ‘task list’.

I would like to learn more about how direct-to-iphone and/or direct-to-all hearing aid devices function. Specifically, I will focus on how these devices are designed, and what types of compromises people will be making with the acoustics of their hearing aid in order to achieve streaming abilities.

I will increase my knowledge and skills in the area of verification of open fit hearing aids.  Specifically, I will focus on proper methods for determining when a hearing aid is an open fitting one and how to accurately verify that fitting using real ear measurements.

My goal is to gain knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, regulations, ethics, and practice standards that apply to ACSLPA members. Specifically, I want to ensure that my practice is in alignment with the legislation and key ACSLPA documents.

I will increase my knowledge about the use of FM and DM technology for unilateral and mild/minimal hearing loss. I would like to improve my ability to convey information about these technologies to stakeholders such as teachers and school principals and administrators. By improving my own skills, I hope that I will become a better advocate for my clients with mild/minimal hearing loss.

I plan to improve my knowledge in the area of public health promotion and the role that I might be able to play in improving the hearing health of many.  Specifically, I will focus on increasing my knowledge in the area of population health. I will learn more about the effectiveness of the hearing health services that I offer and will learn to consider this in light of being a good steward of resources. I will learn more about the possible partnerships I could build and where they might be fruitful.

I will increase my knowledge and skills in pediatric amplification. As I do not see a large number of pediatric clients, I need to always be brushing up on these skills to make sure I’m providing the best possible services. Specifically, I would like to build my confidence and ability to provide information right away to families rather than needing time to think about my response. This should improve my efficiency and help build my reputation as an audiologist.

I will build my competence and comfort in fitting hearing aids and assistive listening devices for both pediatric and adult populations.

I plan to improve my skills as a communicator when counselling patients regarding hearing loss.  Specifically, I want to focus on ensuring that I am effectively and accurately communicating the results of tests, strategies and follow-up plans in such a way that the patient understands fully.

I will increase my knowledge and skills in the area of industrial audiological programs.  Specifically, I will focus on how to review annual industrial hearing screenings and provide appropriate referrals and recommendations. I will need to become familiar with all the possible referral sources.

I would like to improve my skills in the area of clinical masking terminology and techniques used during audiological evaluations. To do this, I will need to refresh my knowledge and determine what techniques are readily available to me.

I will learn more about alternative tests that can be used with pediatric and difficult-to-test clients. In particular, I want to improve my knowledge in the area of cortical auditory evoked potentials and be able to use this method with confidence.

I will increase my knowledge, skills, and understanding in the area of auditory brainstem response testing to become more confident and efficient in performing these assessments.
