Understanding Signing Requirements during Supervised Practice
Part 3 of a 3-Part Series
Question:
We have recently hired an internationally educated SLP who requires a period of supervised practice. What are the expectations regarding their formal documentation during the supervised practice period?

Answer:
Individuals completing a period of supervised practice as part of registration requirements with ACSLPA are expected to complete clinical documentation. Consistent with ACSLPA’s Standard of Practice 4.3 Documentation and Information Management, indicator d. i and ii, “the name and professional designation of the person documenting information” regarding the client (i.e., the supervisee) and the “name and professional designation of the person taking professional responsibility for the work” (i.e., the supervisor) must be documented in the client file. The supervising SLP or audiologist should review the report, then sign by clearly indicating their name, designation, and that they have reviewed the report (e.g., “This document has been read and reviewed by Jordan Jones, R.SLP/R. Aud”).
The College has recently developed a free online course entitled ACSLPA’s Supervised Practice Period for Internationally Educated Applicants available on the website. This course is suitable for supervisors or supervisees involved in the ACSLPA supervised practice period, or anyone interested in finding out more about it. In addition to outlining the purpose and basic structure of the supervised practice period, it summarizes the roles and responsibilities of ACSLPA, the supervisor, and supervisee, and includes practical tips to ensure a successful supervised practice period. You can also check out our webinar on Clinical Supervision-Tips and Requirements available on ACSLPA’s YouTube channel.
