Who are the Supervisees?

Supervisees include:

  • Canadians who completed their programs of study abroad, and
  • New Canadians who move to Canada after completing their program of study abroad.

Support for Transitioning

  • While there may be differing levels of familiarity with the Canadian and Albertan healthcare contexts, all supervisees require support for transitioning into practicing their profession in Alberta.

Supervisees are issued a conditional practice permit for the purpose of completing the supervised practice period

  • Supervisees will have a condition on their practice permit which states that they must practice under supervision.
  • The condition is removed on successful completion of the supervised practice.

Supervisees must obtain at least 450 hours of supervised practice (equivalent to 12 weeks of full-time work)

  • May be extended on supervisor’s recommendation.

Supervised Practice

  • Is the last step to becoming fully registered with ACSLPA.

The purpose of the supervised practice period is to ensure that the conditional registrant has the knowledge and skills required to practice their profession while supporting and assisting them in becoming successful, independent practitioners in Alberta.

The period of supervised practice is meant to allow the registrant to obtain experience that would be reflective of their practice for their profession and to demonstrate that they meet minimum competency for practice requirements.

The supervised practice period therefore helps ACSLPA meet its mandate for public protection by taking steps to ensure that new registrants can provide competent, safe, and ethical care.
